About Us

Welcome to FairyHouses.fun

My enthusiasm for making Fairy Houses developed from my previous interest in building dolls houses and designing their interiors and furniture.  I love making the small accessories to go in them and I have encouraged my grandchildren to have their own dolls house and share my enthusiasm for crafting things for them.

As a result of that, my 9 year granddaughter and I decided to make a fairy house for her,  so we began thinking of what we could make it from.  My 6 year old grandson was also enthusiastic and readily joined in

Firstly we raided my log store looking for suitable small trunks of wood to make the basics of the fairy houses. We live in the country so then began foraging together looking for materials for the fairies  home. Up until then the children had preferred to go on bike rides but once we started our foraging walks they commented how much more you see around you when you are on foot and now this is their preferred outing. This was a really fun part of making the fairy houses and I couldn’t believe their insight in what they could visualise, in say a seed head which became a cooking pot – or a smallpiece of wood/bark for the front door –  or a twisted twig to make a nice shaped window, or a feather for the smoke from the chimney.  I was really surprised  too when my grandson saw some very small berries on a tree which were the exact colour and shape of a tiny apple and brought them to me excitedly and with such enthusiasm.

Foraging for the Fairy Houses ….

We collected bark and twigs – the more aged and bent the twigs were, the better. The grandchildren developed a keen eye for the miniature world and would come rushing back with specimens saying, “Mama this would make a good…….”. I was seriously impressed with their vision and the Fairy house began to develop.

We use natural materials ….. bark, twigs, acorns, conifer cones, conifer berries, moss, twine,  chestnut husks,  seeds, pebbles, shells, flint stone, feathers, anything really ….and once the structure of the Fairyhouse is built we start on the decorations.

The imagination runs riot…. balconies, rope ladders, swings, different window designs, woodland gardens etc.  We also had sessions making things from clay (which they had already done for the dolls houses) – so mushrooms, butterflies and other things evolved to add  interest to the fairy homes.

And so, this is how it all began. I received lots of interests from both collectors, grandparents and children alike which made me start thinking of making and selling them for others to enjoy as much as we do.

Please do look at examples of the different designs and features on the bespoke fairy houses page  – anything is possible – I can personalise doors with the children’s names, fairy signs can have a house name on them, and as they are bespoke and  made to order, you can choose exactly what you want.  If not, you can rely on my imagination instead and buy one of the ready-made fairy houses on the shop fairy houses page.  The designs will continue to develop over time – I will shortly be making some flint-stone houses, log cabin types, beachfront pebble ones – the imagination continues to evolve, so watch the website and see my new designs as they come on board.

The fairy houses are mainly designed for indoor/conservatory use but if put in a sheltered dry outdoor position, as long as it is under cover, they would be fine.

Please note that the fairy houses are not suitable for very small children – please see my Important Information page re the advice/materials etc.
Due to the delicate nature of the product, posting the fairy houses is difficult as damage could easily occur.
So collection is from my home in Cambridgeshire or local delivery is available.
Please contact me via phone or email, with any questions.
I hope you enjoy browsing this  fairy house website.
